As a general guide, we recommend servicing most automatic transmissions around every 40,000 km. However, the correct interval can vary depending on the vehicle, transmission type, manufacturer recommendations and how the vehicle is used. Regular servicing helps maintain the correct fluid condition and gives us an opportunity to identify developing problems before they become more serious.

Common signs include shuddering or jerking, slipping, delayed engagement when selecting Drive or Reverse, harsh or unusual gear changes, revving without accelerating properly, transmission warning lights, unusual noises, or fluid leaks. Some transmission faults can be intermittent and may only occur under certain driving conditions. If your vehicle starts behaving differently, having it checked early can help identify the cause before further damage occurs.

Shuddering or jerking can have a number of causes, including transmission fluid condition, torque converter problems, clutch wear, hydraulic or solenoid faults, or issues with the transmission's electronic controls. Similar symptoms can sometimes also be caused by engine or driveline faults. Proper diagnosis is important before replacing parts, as the same symptom can have several different causes.

If the engine revs increase but the vehicle does not accelerate normally, the transmission may be slipping. Continuing to drive can potentially cause further damage, particularly if the problem is getting worse. We recommend avoiding unnecessary driving and having the vehicle assessed as soon as practical. If the vehicle is struggling to move, losing drive, or you are unsure whether it is safe to drive, contact us before driving it further.

A conventional automatic transmission generally uses a torque converter and a series of internal gears and clutches. A CVT uses a different design to provide continuously variable ratios rather than traditional fixed gears. A dual-clutch transmission, often referred to as a DCT or DSG, uses two clutches to provide fast gear changes. Each type operates differently and has its own servicing, diagnostic and repair requirements, which is why using a transmission specialist is important.

Yes. CVT transmissions rely heavily on the correct fluid to operate properly, and regular servicing can help maintain fluid condition and transmission performance. Service intervals vary between manufacturers and vehicles. Using the correct CVT fluid is especially important, as different CVT systems can require different specifications.

Yes. DSG and other dual-clutch transmissions operate differently from conventional automatic transmissions and can have specific fluid, filter and servicing requirements. Some systems use wet clutches while others use dry clutches, and service requirements vary between manufacturers. Correct procedures, fluids and diagnostic equipment are important when servicing or diagnosing these transmissions.

Automatic transmissions are designed to operate with specific types of fluid, and using the wrong specification can affect lubrication, hydraulic operation, clutch performance and gear changes. CVT, dual-clutch and conventional automatic transmissions can all have very different fluid requirements. We use the correct fluid specification for the transmission rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all transmission fluid.
